National Epilepsy Week 2024

This year National Epilepsy Week runs from 20-26 May 2024 and we will be launching our brand new epilepsy awareness video “Epilepsy – it’s more than just seizures.”

Watch the trailer

When we asked you on social media what was the one thing you wished people knew about your epilepsy, the most poignant response came from a young woman who said:

“…that epilepsy changed my life completely, but no-one noticed.”

So, with the help of people affected by the condition, we have made a short film all about epilepsy, how it can impact your life and why the three most important words to remember for seizure first aid are “Calm, Cushion, Call”.

The film is 20 minutes long and is perfect for sharing with colleagues at work through a ‘lunch ‘n learn’ session. Set aside a time and room with a screen, invite colleagues to bring along their lunch and just press play. Or you could share the video with community organisations or groups that you attend.

You can hear how Jasmine was asked to leave her dance course because of her epilepsy and was then turned down for endless jobs as people feared she might have a seizure. How Tom fell down a flight of stairs and now struggles to remember words. And how Karen worries about her son who has epilepsy and who is a student at uni.

You can also see the incredible work of our researchers as they try to understand the causes of epilepsy and how it could be better treated.

“Epilepsy – it’s more than just seizures”

Raising awareness of epilepsy is important if more people are to understand the condition and that it is more than just seizures.

And don’t forget to share your ‘lunch ‘n learn’ photos and videos on our social media /epilepsysociety

Other ways that you can get involved in National Epilepsy Week 2024

We are also asking people to share their 'personal bests' via our social media channels. 20 May is 100 days before the start of the paralympics, when elite athletes from across the globe will be going for gold.

The Olympics and Paralympics are way beyond the reach of most of us, yet every day we all achieve goals – some big, some small – which often go unnoticed, but which definitely deserve a shout out.

That is why during National Epilepsy Week we want to celebrate your Personal Bests across all walks of life. So, while they could be in sport, the arts, music, education, they could also be about living with epilepsy, overcoming your own personal hurdles and celebrating your triumphs.

We also have details about sharing and downloading our seizure first aid infographic and posters - Calm, Cushion, Call.
