Epilepsy awareness, seizure management and emergency medication

25th October, 9.30am – 4.30pm

6-hour online course providing delegates with an understanding of epilepsy, how to manage different types of seizures and administer emergency medication.

The course includes:

  • an introduction to epilepsy
  • causes and diagnosis
  • types of seizures (including management and first aid)
  • status epilepticus
  • treatments – medication and side effects
  • risk management and support needs
  • an introduction to emergency medications for epilepsy
  • when it should be used
  • how it is administered
  • individual care plans
  • benefits of use
  • side effects
  • practical demonstration
  • risk assessments
  • storage and disposal
  • duty of care

Objectives

At the end of this course delegates will be able to:

  • give examples of how epilepsy can affect a person physically, socially and psychologically
  • briefly describe how epilepsy is diagnosed and treated
  • list the actions to take to support someone during a seizure
  • describe the procedure to administer emergency medication
  • identify safe management of emergency medication, including storage and disposal
  • explain actions to take if problems occur during administration
  • identify key aspects of any policies, procedures and responsibilities relating to the medication
