Lamotrigine is classed as a category 2 anti-epileptic medication under guidance from the Medicines and Healthcare products Agency (MHRA). This means that the doctor should decide, with the individual, whether it is safe to switch to a different version of this same drug.
Switching to an alternative medication
Ley Sander, medical director at Epilepsy Society said: “Anyone who is currently taking TEVA lamotrigine should make an appointment to see their GP so they can discuss changing to another suitable form of the medication.
“Obviously, with some versions of TEVA lamotrigine being discontinued, people will have no option but to be prescribed a new drug. This should not be a problem but it is important to discuss your medication change with your doctor and to monitor how you feel on the new medication and any change in seizure control and side effects.”
