Different versions of levetiracetam granules now available

Up until recently, there was only one version of levetiracetam granules available on prescription in the UK. Patients being prescribed levetiracetam granules would always receive Desitrend coated granules, which can be swallowed with liquid or food and are licensed to be administered in a feeding tube with 10ml of water.

There is now another version of levetiracetam granules available in the UK called Neuraxpharm. These granules are designed to be dissolved in a glass of water and are not licensed to be administered in a feeding tube, so they may not be suitable for some patients with epilepsy if they have swallowing difficulties, use a feeding tube or are on a ketogenic diet.

Now that there are two versions of levetiracetam granules available, it’s important to speak to your health provider if you take this medication to make sure that there is consistency of care and you receive a product tailored to your needs. They may need to specify the brand name Desitrend or Neuraxpharm on your prescription, rather than just the generic name levetiracetam.
