Postal strike and prescriptions
The Royal Mail has assured customers that it will prioritise delivery of medical prescriptions during industrial strike action (26 and 31 August, 8 and 9 September). However, anyone who is due a delivery of their epilepsy medication should make sure they get their prescription in up to 10 days before it is due. Prescriptions for the September strike dates should be ordered by 31 August.

A new safety review is being launched into the epilepsy medication topiramate. The drug (brand name Topamax) is already known to be associated with an increased risk of congenital malformations and effects on fetal growth when taken during pregnancy.

The Government has updated advice around the Covid-19 booster and the flu jab programmes for the autumn. This means that everyone with epilepsy, aged five and over, will be eligible for the Covid-19 booster, although they will not be automatically eligible for the flu jab.
Hot tips for coping in the heatwave
A survey* carried out by the Epilepsy Society showed that 62 per cent of people with uncontrolled seizures experience an increase in their seizure activity during unusually hot weather. In the current heatwave, it is important to make sure that you take sensible precautions to ensure that you stay cool, particularly if you know your epilepsy is sensitive to the heat.
