Read the latest updates on epilepsy medication, including medication shortages.

Always try to get your prescription to your pharmacy in good time – up to seven days before you need it. This will enable the pharmacist to source other supplies if they are out of stock.

Arrange for repeat prescriptions to be sent electronically to a pharmacy of your choice.

If you are experiencing difficulties accessing your medication, always try contacting the customer service desk listed on the patient information leaflet that comes with your medication.

Accord Phenobarbital various doses out of stock

We have spoken to Accord and they have advised us of the following medication shortages.

Accord's Phenobarbital 60mg is currently out of stock, and is due back on 3 October 2026

Accord's Phenobarbital 15mg is currently out of stock, and is due back on 2 November 2026

Accord's Phenobarbital 30mg is IN stock

Sodium valproate (Epilim Chronosphere) 100mg modified release granules sachets sugar free will be out of stock from late February until mid-June 2026.

A medicine supply notification had been issued for sodium valproate (Epilim Chronosphere), an anticonvulsant and mood stabiliser used to treat epilepsy which stated that the medication would be available from mid-April. 

Sodium valproate (Epilim Chronosphere) 100mg modified release granules sachets sugar free will now be out of stock from late February until mid-June 2026.

Alternative sodium valproate products remain available.

8 May 2026

SERB have reported a shortage of Midazolam (Epistatus) 7.5mg/0.75ml oromucosal solution pre-filled oral syringes sugar free which is currently out of stock until late May 2026.

A Medicine Supply Notification, outlining the management options for this shortage has been issued. The options are as follows:  

 not initiate new patients on Epistatus 7.5mg/0.75ml oromucosal solution pre-filled oral syringes until the shortage resolves

  • consider prescribing midazolam (Buccolam or the generic) 7.5mg/1.5ml oromucosal solution pre-filled oral syringes where appropriate

If any patient is concerned about their treatment, they should discuss this with their clinician.

Teva Clonazemam 2mg back in stock

We have been informed by Teva that Clonazemam 2mg is back in stock.

6 November 2025

There is a supply issue with Frisium (clobazam) 10mg tablets and they will be unavailable until 30th December 2025.

We have been informed by the Department of Health that there is a supply issue with Frisium (clobazam) 10mg tablets. They should be back in stock by 30th December 2025. 

If appropriate, and you can take an alternative medication there are alternative suppliers of clobazam 10mg tablets can support the gap. 

 

10 October 2025

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have told us that Teva Clonazepam 2mg is currently unavailable until late November 2025.

UPDATE: 28 April 2026 - Teva Clonazepam 2mg is back in stock.

Alternative suppliers of Clonazepam 2mg tablets remain in stock and can support the gap.
If you have any concerns about switching to a different version of your medicine, please speak to your pharmacist, GP or specialist for advice.

MHRA Medications Notification: Topiramate Zydus Pharmaceuticals UK 20mg/ml Oral Solution (pack size 150ml and 280 ml bottles)

Zydus Pharmaceuticals UK LTD has informed the MHRA that there is an error on the artwork for the outer carton and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) of Topiramate Zydus Pharmaceuticals UK 20mg/ml Oral Solution (pack size 150ml and 280ml bottles). The instruction for use is missing the step to shake well prior to opening and before each use. These packs are Prescription Only Medicines (POM) and are intended for use in both adult patients and paediatric patients.

The medication is still being dispensed but healthcare professionals are and retailers are advised to review the information contained within this notification and, where possible, inform customers that Topiramate Zydus Pharmaceuticals UK 20mg/ml Oral Solution (Pack Size 150ml and 280ml bottles) should be “shaken well prior to opening and before each use”. 

Healthcare professionals should continue to prescribe and dispense the product as the batches listed are not being recalled.
