Death of the Duchess of Kent

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Kent. Our own Kent House, which is now the Epilepsy Society's training centre was named in her honour.

In 1969 Her Royal Highness kindly opened the Epilepsy Society’s social centre, as shown in this photograph, which was built to provide a welcoming space for residents to meet informally.  The following year we were granted permission to name the social centre Kent House after the Duchess. When the Duchess opened Kent House, she also took the time to visit displays in our Recreational Hall and to hand out prizes in our sports field. She was fondly remembered by our residents.

Pride of place in the entrance hall to Kent House is a framed portrait of the Duchess which is regularly admired by residents and staff. The photograph often prompts wonderful conversations for residents.

Fifty six years after being opened as a social centre for people with complex epilepsy, Kent House is still an important meeting place and training centre for the charity.

Our thoughts are with the Duke of Kent and the Royal Family at this sad time.
